El medio falso amigo COMPROMISE y su relación con COMMIT

Compromise es un medio falso amigo porque significa 'comprometer' solo en el sentido de poner en peligro, y no contraer una obligación, cosa que se expresa con el verbo commit.

Veamos los usos de uno y otro, así como los de sus sustantivos derivados.

Compromise n. solución negociada (en la que se hacen cesiones); peligro. 
After long hours of negotiation a compromise was reached

Commit (to) v. intr. comprometerse (con, a).
I think I can come but I won't commit myself till I know for sure
Cain committed (himself) to giving me English classes

I’m committed to this company and I shouldn’t compromise its future by compromising quality

Commitment n. (to, on), (to+infinitivo): compromiso (con), (de).
I can’t meet you tomorrow because I have a prior commitment

Como cabe observar, aparte de las cuestiones de significado a tener en cuenta, debemos estar atentos al régimen preposicional que estos verbos rigen, así como que si el sustantivo commitment es seguido de un verbo, este lo hará en infinitivo y si es el verbo to commit el que va acompañado de otro verbo, este último adoptará la forma –ing.
